Mdm Halimah Yacob began her career in 1978 as a legal officer with the National Trades Union Congress. She rose through the ranks to be Executive Secretary of the United Workers of Electronics, Director of the Women’s Development Secretariat and was appointed its Deputy Secretary-General in 2007. In 1999, she became the first Singaporean to be elected to the ILO.
Mdm Halimah was elected as MP in 2001. In 2011, she was appointed Minister of State for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, now known as the Ministry of Social and Family Development.
In 2013, Mdm Halimah became the first woman to be appointed as Speaker of Parliament. She was sworn in as the Republic of Singapore’s eighth President in 2017.
Mdm Halimah is active in social causes and champions women’s issues.
