Darfur Low Smoke Stoves Project in Sudan

This project improves household health by replacing traditional cooking methods, burning wood and charcoal inside the home, with low smoke LPG stoves. The project provides the following positive impacts:

  • Each stove installed in a household in Darfur saves 4.5 tCOâ‚‚e, equivalent to one passenger flying 3 times between London and New York.
  • 26 % of women are starting new income generating activities, with a further 8% expanding existing activities with the time saved no longer having to collect wood.
  • 58% of women said they had more time to spend with their children.

Cleaner Cookstoves Project in Rwanda and Malawi

The locally produced ‘Canarumwe’ or efficient cookstoves provided by this project use less firewood, up to 50% less than a traditional stove, bringing with them employment opportunities, health benefits and reduced deforestation. This project provides the following positive impacts:

  • The stoves are more efficient at heat retention and therefore each save 1 tonne of wood per year
  • 25 jobs are created for every 1000 households reached by the project
  • 67% of people employed by the project are women, many of whom have never had a source of income

Clean Water Project in Ethiopia

This project rehabilitates broken boreholes to provide clean water to communities whilst providing a funding mechanism to ensure long-term maintenance. As a result, families no longer have to boil water, saving firewood. This project provides the following positive impacts:

  • The project maintains 41 boreholes
  • Female-led WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) committees are set up to ensure community access to the boreholes and provide work and empowerment to women in the region.
  • The committee also runs classes teaching children the importance of hygiene and hand-washing.
