Mrs. Daphne Mashile-Nkosi was born in Pilgrims Rest, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, in 1958 and grew up in Soweto, Johannesburg.
She became a student activist in the early 1970s and took part in organising the 1976 Soweto student uprisings which protested the imposition of the Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction in African schools.
The audacity of the “Class of ’76,” represented a high-water mark in the anti-apartheid struggle; it shook the underbelly of the regime and changed the country’s destiny forever.
