Mdm Halimah Yacob began her career in 1978 as a legal officer with the National Trades Union Congress, and rose up the ranks to be the Executive Secretary of the United Workers of Electronics and the Director of the Women’s Development Secretariat. In 1999, she became the first Singaporean to be elected into the Geneva-based International Labour Organisation (ILO) which she served for four terms.
Mdm Halimah was elected as an MP in 2001 for Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC). Her final and fourth term as an MP was in the newly formed Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. She was Deputy Secretary General of the NTUC before she was appointed Minister of State for MCYS in 2011. In 2013, she was appointed as the ninth Speaker of Parliament, and was the first woman to serve in that capacity.
Mdm Halimah is active in social causes, and is the Patron to more than 40 organisations.
Mdm Halimah was sworn in as the 8th President of the Republic of Singapore on 14 September 2017.
