MARIA RACHEL JIMENEZ ARENAS was elected to the House of Representatives during the 14th and 15th Congress and in the present 19th Congress. She is the Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as the Legislative Oversight Committee on the Visiting Forces Agreement. She is a Member of the Congressional Oversight on the Official Development Assistance and sits as the Vice Chairperson of the Committees on Appropriation, Transportation, Public Works, and Health. Rep. Arenas is the Country Ambassador for the Philippines of the Women Political Leaders in Brussels, and continues to be a Governor for the Philippine Red Cross, for more than a decade now. She also served as the Chairperson of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, a national agency under the Office of the President. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University. She also finished the course on “Negotiation and Dispute Resolution” at the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University. Her entry to politics marked the end of political violence in her district and the hallmark of her political career is her regular dialogue and direct partnership with her constituents. Her advocacy is community empowerment to achieve genuine, sustainable, and inclusive development. She transformed her district into a progressive, prosperous, and peaceful community. She was honored as the Most Outstanding Congresswoman in 2007. In 2011, she was nominated as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men and Women (TOYM). In 2012, she received an Award as the Most Outstanding Congresswoman for her exemplary performance in legislation and constituency service from the media group BIZNEWS Asia. She also holds the distinction of being the first woman of the Third District of Pangasinan elected to the Regular Batasang Pambansa (National Congress).

Feminist diplomacy applies a gendered lens to all political pursuits, including poverty reduction, sustainable development, peace and security, defence and the protection of human rights. How do educational inequalities impact the success of these political objectives? How can gender-based violence be prevented and eliminated at policy level? What are the most effective ways of diffusing the need to learn about and from feminist diplomacy?
