Description

Lorraine started counselling abused women and children in 2008. She joined the Star Shelter under Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) in 2011 and oversees the shelter that provides safety and support for survivors of domestic violence. As a specialist in violence against women issues, Lorraine is invited to give talks both locally and overseas at the Asian & Global Conference of Women’s Shelters and NGO CSW. In 2020, she co-chaired the Focus Group committee of the Family Violence Interagency Taskforce which contributed to several changes in the Family Violence Amendment Bill in 2023 . In 2021, she led the Police Training Working Group (PTWG) in creating a national curriculum for the training of police frontline officers in working with survivors of domestic violence. In 2023, SCWO partnered SHE to launch SHECARES@SCWO a one-stop support centre for victim-survivors of gender based online harms where Lorraine serves as Centre Head.

Violence impacts 1 in 3 women and girls globally of all ages, income levels, races, ethnicities, faiths and cultures. This session examines how these factors intersect with gender and impact how, when and why women experience higher levels of violence. What is currently being done to tackle these unacceptable levels of violence against women and girls in Asia and where do we go from here?
