Mdm Halimah Yacob began her career in 1978 as a legal officer with the National Trades Union Congress. She rose through the ranks to be Executive Secretary of the United Workers of Electronics, Director of the Women’s Development Secretariat and was appointed its Deputy Secretary-General in 2007. In 1999, she became the first Singaporean to be elected to the ILO. She was elected as MP in 2001. In 2011, she was appointed Minister of State for the then Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. In 2013, she became the first female Speaker of Parliament. Mdm Halimah was sworn in as Singapore’s eighth President in 2017. She is active in social causes and champions women’s issues.
