We Are NOT Weapons of War

International criminal lawyer and investigator / Founder and President of WWoW,

Description

Céline Bardet is an international criminal lawyer and investigator, specializing in war crimes, international crimes, post-conflict justice, and security issues. For nearly 20 years, she has worked in over 90 countries to provide her expertise on justice, security, gender-based violence, and terrorism. Recognized as a global expert, she is the author of the book "Zones sensibles," which recounts her years in the Balkans and is currently being adapted into a series. She is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the Rule of Law Prize (2023) awarded by the International Union of Lawyers, the UNESCO Remarkable Woman Prize (2019), and the JfD Margaret Digital Woman Prize (2018). Witnessing the rise in the use of war rape and its systematic use in conflict zones, as well as the lack of adequate responses and accessible services for distressed survivors, she decided to create the NGO We Are NOT Weapons of War (WWoW) in 2014. This organization is dedicated to combating sexual violence in conflicts worldwide by providing a comprehensive, holistic, and effective response to the endemic use of rape in fragile environments. WWoW has developed a secure mobile site called Back Up, which allows survivors to report incidents and facilitates access to services. The tool also enables the transmission and storage of documents and evidence, accelerating justice and the fight against impunity.

Part 2 - Human weapons: Violence against women in conflict zones

Description
Sexual violences on women in conflict settings represent a grave violation of human rights with devastating short- and long-term consequences. In the long term, the lack of accountability and the trauma carried by affected communities can hinder stability and peace processes, perpetrating generational trauma and cycles of violence. Despite increased awareness and international resolutions, challenges persist when it comes to finding effective solutions to counter these practices. Fighting sexual violences in conflict zones should be a priority and it requires united efforts from multiple actors of society. We will delve into what actionable steps can be taken to enhance individual and collective resilience and combat this issue.
