Les femmes de la diaspora tchadienne

Representative

Description

Merem Tahar, a girl born in Chad, combining her studies in private law with her passion for environmental action. She’s one of the young people under 25 who are campaigning for climate justice. Merem is now the first woman to represent her indigenous people, the Toubou (GÂ) of northern Chad (Tibesti, Borkou, Ennedi, Kanem, Bahr El-Ghazal), on the international stage. Her life has been characterised by a strong presence in the Association Les Femmes de la Diaspora Tchadienne, founded by her mother, Saadia Aboubakar, in November 2020. Through this association, she leads actions in Chad to facilitate access to safe drinking water and education, fight malaria, improve access to healthcare and promote projects to empower women through agriculture in order to preserve the environment, as well as many other humanitarian initiatives. Her international engagement has resulted in her being the first special youth envoy in the history of a presidency of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. In this role, under the chairmanship of Mr Alain-Richard Donwahi (COP15), she mobilises youth and makes them more aware of the challenges of desertification.
