Laurence Equilbey

Insula orchestra

Directrice artistique et musicale

Description

Laurence Equilbey, conductor and musical director of Insula Orchestra and accentus choir, combines artistic excellence with an innovative approach. She founded accentus in the 1990s and Insula orchestra in 2012, a period instrument ensemble, with support from the Hauts-de-Seine department. Keen to renew the performance experience and make it more accessible to all audiences, Equilbey conceives staged productions each season at La Seine Musicale. Classic masterpieces are paired with innovative staging by artists from different worlds, such as filmmakers Pascale Ferrand and David Bobée, or choreographers Marie-Agnès Gillot, Philippe Decouflé & Yoann Bourgeois. In 2024, in collaboration with Antonin Baudry, she created Beethoven Wars, an immersive show combining manga and new technologies. In 2025, she will present Schumann's Paradise and the Peri, staged by Daniela Kerck and video artist Astrid Steiner. In the operatic repertoire, Laurence Equilbey has conducted Weber’s “Der Freischütz,” Mozart’s “Lucio Silla,” Gounod’s “La Nonne sanglante,” and Beethoven’s “Fidelio.” In 2025, she will conduct Cherubini’s “Medea” at the Opéra Comique in Paris, directed by Marie-Eve Signeyrole. Laurence Equilbey is in residence at La Seine Musicale with Insula orchestra. She is also an associate artist at the Grand Théâtre d’Aix-en-Provence, and maintains a privileged relationship with the Philharmonie de Paris. She tours throughout the world (Bozar in Brussels, Theater an der Wien, Barbican Centre, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, Hong Kong Arts Festival, etc.) conducting Insula orchestra or as a guest conductor with such orchestras as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Concerto Köln, Camerata Salzbourg, Akadamie für Alte Musik Berlin, among others. Equilbey champions works by overlooked women composers. Following a complete recording of Louise Farrenc’s symphonies, several albums are set to be released in 2025, including one dedicated to Emilie Mayer (Warner Classics – Erato).

Education, arts and culture to illuminate women’s futures

Description
Education serves as the foundation for understanding, providing individuals with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to engage with diverse perspectives. Art, on the other hand, transcends language barriers, offering universal narratives that can resonate with everyone regardless of their background. When combined, education, arts and culture can catalyse meaningful conversations, encourage empathy, and cultivate a shared sense of humanity. Join us in exploring how educational programs and artistic endeavours are helping to dismantle stereotypes, build bridges between diverse communities, and empower individuals to feel a deeper connection to their surroundings.
