Francesca Donner

The Persistent

Founder, Editor

Description

Francesca Donner is the founder of The Persistent, a women-focused media company, working with journalists and illustrators to amplify women’s voices, stories, perspectives and ideas. Launched in 2024, The Persistent, which is delivered twice-weekly as a newsletter, examines politics, economics, business, art and culture through a gender lens. The Persistent is one answer to the vast and complex work that remains to be done to elevate women in the world at large. It will persist as long as it takes for women to be heard, seen, and valued. Prior to launching The Persistent, Francesca spent many years working in mainstream news including at The New York Times where she was editor of ‘In Her Words’—a newsletter centered on women with a subscriber base of 300,000—and The Wall Street Journal where she focused on women and the future of work. As an editor focused on women and gender, Francesca reserves the right to laugh and cry at the same time.

Fireside Chat: Reframing the News Through Women’s Eyes

Description
If you’re tuning in to mainstream news, chances are you’re not regularly hearing the voices, stories and perspectives of women. Decisions are made in newsrooms that stereotype women, that sideline news about women as if it’s less-than, that omit women from the all-important story mix that makes it to the front page, or that evaluate women’s stories as “worthy” of coverage on the 9 o’clock news. This gender bias plays out around the globe. And it’s been that way since as long as news has been told. But it doesn’t mean we can’t change it. Enter The 51% (France 24), The Persistent, and Gloria Media— three media platforms that are changing the narrative around women’s stories and how they’re told. In a candid conversation, we will discuss how they cover the world with a gender lens. They’ll explore fresh ways to cover women and girls, talk about issues that need to be covered more urgently, and explain why when we put women at the center of the story, it can change the world for the better.

Reinventing role models: Crafting new representations of women

Description
As the arts industry is essentially male dominated, iconic female characters and representations are generally crafted by men. This means they are depicted in ways that do not always resonate with their everyday realities and challenges and are idealised or confined within the limits of very stereotypical roles. How can we ensure that female characters, as well as stories written and produced by women, get full recognition and have a space to thrive in the face of the general public? And how do we create healthy dialogue on fair representation in the art world, in a way that ensures more accurate portrayals of women, depicting them with richer, stronger, and more nuanced characters?
